Hi I'm shiro, this journal isn't for me, it's for my new friends Zen and Tao who are two 8 week old gerbils to talk about what they get up too and what adventures they have!
Feel free to friend this journal, all entries are public so if you don't belong to LJ you can still read everything so please bookmark us!
Well I'll hand you over to Zen for more information!
Hi we're 2 brothers Zen and Tao, I'm Zen, I'm darker in colour and more laid back, I like eating and sleeping and digging. My brother Tao is paler and thinner than me, he's a bit shy but he's also really curious and energetic. He's the architect of our nests and houses, he recently did a fabulous renovation of an eggbox castle! He likes chewing things more than me... unless it's food that is!
We both like pumpkin seeds but we're not so keen on the red bits shiro feeds us, what are they anyways?
shiro is our friend who looks after us, she likes to take our photos but we run past as fast as we can so she gets a lot of blurred ones! XD
She does build us cool castles and hopefully other cool stuff soon too, eh shiro-chan? Also she's teaching us Japanese so you might find a few Japanese words scattered in our posts!
So in this journal we'll let you know all the cool stuff we get up to!
Right, we'll pass you back to shiro for a minute for some tips on making cool stuff for your rodents!
Take it away shiro!
Hi again, shiro here!
I just wanted to say a few things about the stuff I've made for the guys and offer a few tips!
First of all all the models shown in thier journal were made without glue or tape, although I have read that non-toxic school type glue is ok for rodents once it's dry I figure no glue is best of all, and you can still make lots of cool stuff without needing it!
I use tabs and slots mostly to join peices together when constructing the models, this can be surprisingly sturdy, but can take some practice to learn to use well.
When you make somthing for your rodent make sure it's going to be safe for them when they chew it (cos they will chew it) It's safest to stick to paper and cardboard, get all your friends and family to save up boxes and tubes for you, then go nuts!
Always make sure whatever you make will fit in your rodent cage or tank! (unless you are gonna let them play in it in a play pen)
Also make sure that it's not to tall that it might aid an escape attempt if you have a tank or cage that they might easily escape from. XD"
Always supervise your rodents after you give it to them to play with to make sure you didn't make any bad design descisions where they might get stuck.
For example, if you have vertical tube, make sure there is a hole in it at the bottom so when they go diving in head first in thier excitement to explore they can get out the bottom easily!
Usually they will adapt your design to suit themselves but it's rather frustrating and a bit scary for a gerbil or any other rodent to have to back out of a vertical tube thats hard to get a foot hold on! *it tends to ruffle thier fur somewhat* ^^"
By supervising them when they first play with the model you will see any problems and can help out if your rodent gets stuck, and then remove the badly design item and redesign it to be safer!
Finally, have fun and let your imagination go wild! ^^
